Oh Ship!

This is going to be a quick post, but I need some advice from some veteran moms.

My daughter has a new thing. She says “Oh Ship” anytime something doesn’t go her way such as, not being able to open a tube of paint or breaking a crayon. You know what she’s trying to say. And it’s totally my fault for not adjusting to “Oh Shoot!” when I need to find a quick expletive, but should I correct it? I mean, she’s not saying the real word, so that’s a good thing, but since she thinks she is should I reprimand her now before she figures out that it’s “sh*t” and not “ship”?

Of course, I will do my best to not say “Oh Sh*t!” in front of her anymore, but you know toddlers, they remember everything!

You’ll be surprised how quickly it will fade if you stop!! My oldest started doing the same thing when he was around 2, except he said Crap and he said it very clearly. When I was able to stop saying it all the time, he did too. But we did also start talking then about how there are some words that kids shouldn’t say..I don’t know if you want to do that since she’s not actually saying it though.
    Good luck.

Ignore it. If you make a big deal of it, she’ll keep doing it. If you quit saying it, it’ll fade away on its own. :)

Good, because that’s what I’ve been doing. Except for the one time that I made her repeat it about five times because I wanted to make sure she was saying “ship”, I thought it was kind of funny. But I didn’t let her know that of course, lol

Because this is Pirate month, you can tell her that’s what pirates used to say. It may help her stop saying it. Good Luck!

That’s a good one! She was a pirate last year for Halloween, so she knows all about them. Ahoy Baba!

Once you change to a new phrase, she will too since she likes to mimic what you say like all kids. If she sees you saying “Oh, shoot” or some other colorful phrase. Mine was “biscuit” for every bad word when I was raising my nephew. He found it funny when he got older and finally realized what it REALLY meant to replace (thanks to the older kids on the school bus). Then he liked helping me come up with funny phrases like “Oh cracker stacker” or “Holy poppin’ peppers!” for those times I or my husband banged toes or dropped something. Don’t make a big deal of it and just change your phrases into something completely harmless.
